I’m so glad it’s finally my stop on the Absorbed tour because this was my first read of the year and I absolutely loved it!
The story is set in 1996 when our FMC was just finished with her junior year of high school. I would have just finished 8th grade when this story took place, so I found it extremely relatable. Stacey definitely came into her own by the end of the story and I honestly kinda envy that about her cause I know I never really found myself in high school. Where she puts herself out there, I was always painfully shy and afraid of making mistakes.
I had to laugh at the fact that she started out liking two guys, her best friend Gabe, and of course she also liked bad-boy Jessie. I certainly had a slew of crushes back then if my teenage journals are any indication.
Stacey finds herself in a situation she never wanted to be in but found it hard to say no to when it happened, and I found myself in a similar situation that I thankfully was able to get myself out of before it went too far. When she decided to go through her room and throw out everything that reminded her of that night, girl, yes! She went farther than I did but I definitely threw out the dress I was wearing after my incident.
I love that Stacey had a creative outlet that she could turn to in her art. I wouldn’t have survived high school without writing myself though it sounds like Stacey was actually good at it where I just wrote.
This was the perfect book to dive into a new year of reading with. It was captivating and thought provoking. It’s about making mistakes and having the grace to ask for forgiveness and be able to forgive yourself.
Also, it was the author’s debut novel and reading the acknowledgments, she put so much of herself into the story which I absolutely love. You can tell by how beautifully it was written, and I hope to see more from her in the future.
Thank you for the #giftedcopy!
I ranked this one as a 5/5 because it will definitely stay with me for a while.
I made a playlist based on the music that was mentioned in the book or popular songs I added from Summer 1996 😊 so make sure to check that out:
