Our story has dueling timelines, the first one starting in 1902 at The Brookhants School for Girls and then fast-forwarding a hundred years into the future, which is the present timeline. There are also a few times that we go back farther and learn more of the history of the Brookhants family as well.
When the story opens Flo and Clara, two students at Brookhants, who are obsessed with a daring young writer named Mary MacLane have been meeting in secret, having established a club using the book as guidance, called the Plain Bad Heroine Society. Flo and Clara are in love, happily meeting in the apple orchard, and that is where both their bodies are found, with a copy of the book lying open next to them. They seem to be the victims of a swarm of angry yellow jackets. Less than five years later, the school closes forever, but not before three more people die in mysterious and troubling ways.
In present day, Merritt Emmons has published a book about Brookhants, celebrating its feminist history and it’s haunted and cursed nature. Her book is being adapted into a horror movie, staring Harper Harper, and Audrey wells, who each bring a history with them. When Brookhants opens its doors for the first time in over a hundred years, strange things start to happen. So, is there really a curse, or is this just Hollywood exploiting them for a bestseller?
This book is really a story within a story. It honestly took me a while to read it and I just couldn’t seem to get into it. I enjoyed the past timeline a lot more than I did the current timeline because I find history interesting. I was really hoping for it to have more of a creepy factor then it did for me. And I really didn’t enjoy the present timeline at all.
I only rated this one with at 2/5. I honestly should have just DNF’d it probably but I was reading it for a book club event and I didn’t want to miss out on points.
