"Not everything about where you're going has to be about where you've been."
Where They Left Her by @kimberlymccreight was recommended last year as part of the 12 books from 12 friends for 12 months challenge and I'm so glad it was!
The story is presented from various points of view, not to mention through newspaper articles, and through one of the characters diaries. The story does an excellent job of blending suspense with an emotional, powerful story about a community struggling with the consequences of a devastating discovery.
Molly Anderson would be considered the main character, and she's a transplant to this town in New Jersey, and also a reporter for the local paper. Though she doesn't normally cover crime stories, she gets assigned to this one because none of the other reporters are available. Molly has been struggling, having lost a baby not that long ago. Her husband works at the local college, which plays a huge role in this book.
We also get chapters from Stella, who is Molly's friend, Barbara, the police chiefs wife, and Sally, a local teen whose mother turns up missing. The diary entries are from Jenna, Sally's mother, from when she attended high school in Ridgedale. But all of the characters in this story are connected in more than one way.
I thought that this story moved along at an excellent pace, and with each chapter you were left with more questions, and the need to want to figure out what was going on. I was able to piece together a lot of the story, and who some of the individuals that Jenna uses nicknames for in her journal were, but I was still pleasantly surprised by the outcome of the story and there were a few things I didn't see coming.
As this was my first book by Kimberly, I'm excited to pick up some more and I'm really glad this one was recommended to me!
